A well-crafted resume and cover letter are essential tools in any job search. They’re often the first way employers get to know you, so making a strong first impression is key. Whether you’re entering a new field or advancing in your current career, these documents help highlight your skills and experience.
At Oxford International Career Colleges (OICC), we support students in building practical career-ready skills, including resume writing, cover letter development, and interview preparation. Through OICC, students also gain free access to Career Academy Canada, a program designed to help learners develop essential career skills, giving them an extra edge in the job market.
What employers look for in a resume
Hiring managers need to quickly understand who you are and how you can contribute. A strong resume typically includes:
1. Relevant experience
Show the skills and responsibilities you’ve handled that align with the position. Employers want to see you have practical experience that closely matches their needs.
If you apply for your first job, highlight the transferable skills that you have gained through school projects, volunteer work, or personal initiatives, for example, project management, communication skills, time management, problem-solving, etc. These skills can enhance your resume and make you stand out, even without formal work experience.
2. Clear, professional layout
Use clean fonts, consistent spacing, and well-organized sections. A simple, readable layout helps your resume stand out.
3. Specific achievements
Avoid vague statements like “Responsible for customer service.” Instead, use specific examples that demonstrate your achievements e.g. “Supported 25+ clients per day, maintaining a 95% satisfaction rating.”
4. Keywords from the job posting
Many companies use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to filter applications. To increase your chances of being noticed, incorporate keywords and phrases from the job description into your resume. This helps demonstrate that your experience align with the role and ensures your application passes the initial ATS scan.
5. Professional contact information
Include a professional email address, phone number, and your LinkedIn profile, if you have one.
How to build a strong resume
Start with a professional summary
A 2-3 sentence overview highlighting your experience, skills, and career goals. Focus on what makes you the right candidate for the role.
Highlight key skills
Include both technical and soft skills relevant to the job, such as: Communication, Teamwork, Time management, Problem-solving, Software or tools used in your field.
Showcase work or volunteer experience
For each position, include:
- Job title
- Employer
- Dates of employment
- 3–5 bullet points describing responsibilities and achievements
Focus on contributions that align with the job you’re applying for.
Include education and certifications
List degrees, certificates, and training courses.
How to write an effective cover letter
A cover letter complements your resume and gives employers insight into your personality, motivation, and fit for the role.
Keep it clear and concise
A strong cover letter has three parts:
- Introduction
Mention the position you’re applying for and briefly explain why it interests you.
- Body paragraph
Highlight 2-3 relevant experiences or skills and show how they prepare you for this role. Use concrete examples wherever possible.
- Closing
Thank the employer for considering your application and express your interest in an interview.
Show genuine interest
Employers notice when applicants demonstrate knowledge of the organization or role. Tailoring your letter shows initiative and enthusiasm.
Final tips for success
- Proofread carefully – spelling or grammar errors can hurt your chances.
- Personalise your documents – avoid sending the same resume and cover letter to every employer.
- Keep it concise – aim for one page for your resume and a focused, 3–4 paragraph cover letter.
- Use action verbs like organized, coordinated, led, supported, or implemented to show initiative

Continuing Care Assistants (CCAs) are vital members of the healthcare team. They provide hands-on support with daily living, comfort, and emotional care, helping ensure safety, dignity, and quality of life for patients in long-term and community settings. Without their daily presence and compassionate care, healthcare systems would struggle to meet the needs of aging and vulnerable populations.
